This move aligns with the broader goal of reducing the import dependency on China, which currently supplies around 80% of bulk drugs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients - APIs) and 65% of medical devices to India. By encouraging domestic manufacturing through such initiatives, the government aims to enhance self-sufficiency and strengthen the pharmaceutical sector's contribution to the country's healthcare ecosystem.

The establishment of a medical technology park in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is a noteworthy step, with additional states expressing interest in setting up similar parks. The pharmaceutical contract manufacturing landscape in India is expected to witness positive transformations with these initiatives, fostering a more self-reliant and competitive pharmaceutical industry.
